Title
Henry Bibb
Description
In 1849, Henry Bibb published Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, An American Slave, Written by Himself in which this picture appears. It is interesting that he chose a handbill advertizing himself as a runaway slave for his portrait picture. While this book contains little of his life in Canada, he mentions that “in Canada, … I was regarded as a man, and not as a thing” (p. 16.) And later in the book he says: “in Canada, …the British laws recognise no such thing as property in a human being” (p. 195.) Bibb is probably best know as the editor of The Voice of the Fugitive from 1851-1852.
